Introduction
Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture is a government-led initiative that aims to integrate all aspects of horticulture activities in order to improve the sector’s competitiveness and sustainability.
This looks at the development of the horticulture sector covering vegetables, roots, fruits, tuber crops, mushrooms, flowers, coconut, aromatic plants, bamboo, and cashew.
In general, 85% of the cost for the scheme is footed by the central government and 15% by states except for a few northern east states.
Objectives
- Promote holistic growth of horticulture sector including bamboo, coconut through area based strategies and also employing latest technologies in the processing, harvest, marketing etc.
- Encourage aggregation of farmers to bring economies of scale
- Improve quality of produce by using modern techniques like efficient water management
- Support skill development and create employment opportunities for local youth either in producing the harvest or in the post harvest processing and management of the produce like cold storage.
What are the various schemes under MIDH?
Please visit the MIDH website and click on “Schemes” on the top menu, then click on MIDH schemes and it will show 5 major schemes under it is tracked.
- National Horticulture Mission (NHN)
NHN is being implemented by State Horticulture Missions (SHM) in selected districts of 18 States and 6 Union Territories, if farmers want to avail themselves of benefits they need to contact the Horticulture Officer of that district.
- Horticulture Mission for North east and Himalayan States (HMNEH)
This scheme is only for North Eastern & Himalayan States and if farmers want to avail benefits they need to contact the Horticulture Officer of their district.
- National Horticulture Board (NHB)
NHB is implemented in all states and Union Territories, Famers who wants to avail benefits need to contact the Regional Office of NHB or NHB Headquarters
- Coconut Development Board (CDB)
This scheme is for all the Coconut growers in the States and UTs. If farmers want to avail the benefits they need to contact the Regional Office of CDB or CDB Headquarters.
- Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH)
CIH was established in Medizipehima, Nagaland in 2006-07 for providing technical back-stopping through capacity building and training of farmers and Field functionaries in the North Eastern Region.CIH now one of the sub-schemes of MIDH. However, CIH is not implementing any schemes directly.
